Does Your Company have Privacy Policies for Portable Devices?

The September issue of IT Architect Magazine (formerly Network Magazine), included an article by information security consultant Rebecca Herold on the business impact if your employee's portable device (laptop, PDA, BlackBerry) is lost or stolen.  Some of the scenarios outlined are truly corporate nightmares.  One example involves a BlackBerry that was sold on eBay.  The device had belonged to a Morgan Stanley employee; later the buyer discovered that it contained hundreds of confidential emails about the company and the employee!

Herold's article outlines 10 simple steps to reduce your company's risk associated with information stored on lost or stolen devices.

*Tip from Rivermine: your mobile devices should be accounted for in your telecom inventory by employee, and linked to your HR system.  This would help to quickly identify any missing units and have service immediately turned-off.

Renewed Efforts to Increase Federal Government Telework Adoption

Congress has been getting serious about expanding the telework force in government agencies.  After seeing multiple studies showing that the government lags far behind the private sector in telework adoption, the House of Representatives approved a provision for certain federal agencies requiring those agencies to  prove that more of their workers are teleworking or risk losing funding.

Studies have shown the benefits of telework, including happier and more productive employees, reduced traffic, environmental savings and business continuity-related opportunities.

*As government agencies further embrace teleworkers, the amount of IT management related to home connections, wireless devices, etc. will also increase.  Inventory management will become key in the future.

Managing Relationships with Your IT Vendor

The September 19th edition of Network World includes an article on how companies such as UPS and GM manage their IT Vendor relationships.  The article emphasizes that the key to success is to focus discussions with the vendor more on the outcome desired and service levels provided.  Some companies profiled in the article even created dedicated vendor "mentors" that are independent of the contract  negotiation process as a method to facilitate open communications between the companies.
